Volunteer Spotlight

Every month we want to take some time to introduce you to one of our volunteers.  Our hope is to show everyone that there is a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved in Urban Purpose.  This month we want you to meet Chris Dyson, one of our key volunteers at our weekly Sunday meal.

Name: Chris Dyson

Occupation: Investment Banking

Family: Married to Susan for 24 years, with three sons; Will (16), Luke (14), and Jake (11).

Hobbies/Interests: Teaching 8th grade Boys Sunday School, Coaching and watching my sons play football, baseball & basketball; Auburn football, Snow Skiing, Golf

Favorite Restaurant: Sparks Steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan

Favorite Song or Band: Almost anything Rock & Roll from the Ronald Reagan Era

First time to go downtown with Urban Purpose: Shortly after watching Jim McFarland’s video presentation during 2010 GIC.

Favorite thing about being a part of Urban Purpose: Finding common ground with the men downtown and developing friendships over a meal-then having an opportunity to share God’s word and watch the men overcome their struggles through Christ.  Spending time with my oldest son answering God’s call to love our neighbors.  Like so many 40 something year-old-men at my stage of life, its easy to miss that call with all of life’s everyday demands.  Urban Purpose represents a real need right here in our community, and an equally real opportunity for men to serve our Lord and to serve our community.

Welcome to The Urban Purpose Blog!

Thanks so much for checking out the new blog.  We want to take just a second to tell you about some of the cool things God has been doing in the ministry the last few months…..

As many of you have already heard, we got our 501c3 non-profit letter of declaration just a few weeks ago!  This was such a huge answer to prayer and really helps us out with our fundraising moving forward.  Also, our new website is up and running and has a lot of great info and some cool videos that the awesome Ethan Milner (@ethan_milner) did for us.  So, if you haven’t stopped by there, take a minute and check out

On the ministry front things have been going well.  We have had between 60-100 folks at our Sunday meals the last few months (last summer we averaged about 10!) and God continues to raise up more and more volunteers to go down with us each week.  We have six people in a recovery program right now and also have three that have graduated and are working and living on their own.  Please continue to pray for us as we disciple these men and women.

Again, thanks so much for stopping by and checking out the blog.  We’ll keep it updated consistently with volunteer spotlights, information about the homeless in Birmingham, prayer needs, and ways you can get plugged into the ministry.  Hope to see you this Sunday at 2:30pm to head downtown!
